[Minor] Changes [By David Bowie]

Hello again! So, as promised I have some updates about my project. And you have probably guessed by the title there are some minor changes!

I will be researching the obstacles faced by implementing and adopting technology into classrooms at the high school level. More specifically, I will be conducting this research in the perspective of teachers. I will also be comparing these results based on whether a school is a charter or public school. I will still be working on the digital textbook project at ASU CSI, but their research is more in the perspective of the student. I wanted to take a differ approach.

After much reading, and searching Google Scholar, I have found many many articles talking about the problems teachers face with technology in classrooms at a university level, but very little on a high school level.

On a completely unrelated note, Wednesday was a very productive day! I read a bunch of articles relating to my research, but before my eyes could start to tear up, Ruth assigned me a little project. I was to organize imagination boxes! (Sounds pretty cool huh?) Well in short, they are these boxes with tons of supplies, like colored tape, markers, scissors, sticky shapes, ect. So, here's a before and after shot of that.

I have to go for now! I'll talk to you all later!
P.S I'm taking my spring break next week, so if I don't post that is why! If anything interesting happens I'll be sure to let you guys know!
Bye! :)

  1. Hi, I am Nathan from Lutheran High School in Parker Colorado. The Idea of digital textbooks is an interesting topic. I am interested in knowing what are some of the ways that a digital textbook could have features that a typical school textbook could not have. Also do you see digital textbooks will become more prevalent because of how much cheaper they are, or do you think that because of technical problems that may occur with them that people will just continue to use regular books? In addition, how do you believe that digital textbooks could add value to the classroom and help students learn?

    1. Hey Nathan! So some of the features a digital textbooks that have been discussed are having a chat interface, so students can see who is online and where they are in the reading. So, any questions they might have they can ask fellow classmates. Also, something that has been looked into is having a robot tutorer that tracks your progress and creates new questions based on your ability and knowledge of the subject. Another topic that has been thrown around is the idea of a personalized digital textbook that is specifically calibrated just for you and your needs.

I think that digital textbooks will be prevalent in classrooms in the future, however hardcover textbooks will also still be around. I don't think hardcover textbooks will ever completely disappear.

Digital textbooks can accommodate for collaborative learning. So, the students are all learning together and from one another. Extensive research on learning processes has been done to make sure that the digital textbooks improve learning in the classrooms.

  2. Very cool! Are you planning on conducting any interviews as part of your research? I hope you have a great spring break!

    1. I am considering interviews. However, that is a time consuming task and I am not sure if I will have enough time to do them well.

  3. Hey Val! I think that the changes made your project even more interesting! From all the reading you have done, what differences and similarities do you expect to see between the implementation of technology in a high school setting and in a college setting?

    1. I think that in the high school setting the teachers don't have to deal with trying to attract more students to campus with the use of technology. But I do believe the concerns will be very similar.

  4. Hi Val,

So is this a change in your SRP research question: "researching the obstacles faced by implementing and adopting technology into classrooms at the high school level."

Maybe you could narrow it down to a specific subject area that you know has seen a specific technology in use today? Also, what will you measure?
